Caitlin Flanagan has many failings, but as far as I know she's never before been accused of horribly botching the history of the British novel. Until now.

And I'm not reading any further. Wilkie Collins would perhaps like to have a word with Flanagan.
She's right that Woodlief's article is stupid, but there are better explanations as to why. Ahem.
