Saw The Simpsons Movie tonight. The 7-Year-Old declares it the "best and the funniest movie I've ever seen!" Even granting his limited experience, he has a point. It's pretty damn funny -- the first half-hour or so anyway. After that it flags a bit before rallying again towards the end. But even the relatively flatter jokes, as well as the inevitable mawkish bits, are far funnier and better done than anything else you'll see in American cinema this year. Including even that humorous Robin Williams movie where he plays that priest, I bet!
But what I really liked was that The Simpsons Movie relentlessly hews to and espouses Good Liberal Values. It is not crassly partisan, but it does point out very thoroughly that Conservatives are hypocrites and fools while in the end reaffirming Core Liberal Beliefs, including but not limited to: The Family, Your Community, Being Nice to Other People, Cleaning Up After Yourself, Loving Your Children, Not Destroying the Planet, Not Being Completely Mean to Your Wife All the Time, and even Religion. Oh, and Thoughtfulness.
Just wanted to make that clear before I go over to Teh Corner and see a link to the wingnut review of the film I fully expect to be showing up there, oh, any minute now. (And if you don't know what I mean, you don't read enough Alicublog.)
