In a shocking development, Red State says something dishonest and stupid!
It has been 64 days since the President sent Congress an emergency war spending bill to provide the funds our troops urgently need.
Democrats justify their pork-ladened attempt to legislate defeat in Iraq by saying they are following the will of the American people.
The Democrats' reliance upon that argument is misplaced.
A new AP-Ipsos poll finds 57 percent disapprove of the Democrats' handling of Iraq.
Congress scored its highest approval in a year - 40 percent. Among self-described political independents, who gave 57 percent of their votes to Democrats last November, only 32 percent approve of the job Congress is doing; 36 percent favor the way Democrats are handling Iraq....
The Democrats hypocrisy is too much for Americans to approve. Can the Democrats really expect approval when they claim to support the troops at the same time they fail to send legislation to the President to provide the money required to support our troops fighting the war? Don't forget that the legislation the Democrats have failed to send to the President was carefully crafted to ensure a veto.
Gracious. Ordinarily you'd think that when a Democratic Congress's poll numbers go up, that would be good news for the Democratic party. Wow. Thanks, Red State, for correcting that misperception.
But the real fun lies in Red State's conclusion that independents' approval of the Congress is down because these independents don't like how Democrats are being mean to the President by trying to take away his war.
Because the actual poll suggests exactly the opposite:
Public approval for Congress is at its highest level in a year as Democrats mark 100 days in power and step up their confrontation with President Bush over his handling of the Iraq War, the issue that overshadows all others.
Yet for all their eagerness to challenge Bush, congressional Democrats so far have failed to attract significant support among independents, a group that helped propel them to power in last fall's elections and now appears more strongly opposed to the war than the general public....
.... the AP poll indicates the public wants Congress to push for an end to a war that has claimed the lives of more than 3,200 U.S. troops.
Emphasis, mine.
So. Ought the Democrats to do what David Broder wants, and compromise with an unpopular president on an unpopular war?
Or perhaps do what amounts to the same thing, and listen to Red State's ooga-booga bullshit about "supporting the troops"?
Or maybe they should do what the country wants and keep up the pressure on Bush and wrap this albatross of a war around the GOP's wattled neck?
I'm not totally confident that they'll do the obvious thing, much less the right thing. But that doesn't make it any less obvious or right.
