Ah, the bullshit flies: it comes to our notice, via the New York Times, of all fucking places, that Amanda M & Melissa M are in "hot water" because Professional Outraged Catholic and homophobic misogynist bigot Bill Donahue is Professionally Outraged at them for making "anti-Catholic" comments. And professional abrasive lunatic Michelle Malkin is shrieking about how Amanda curses and how very shocking that is. And the entire spoilt-child poopy-diapers Right Screechosphere is jumping up and down and pretending they matter.
The defense of The Edwards Two is being made eloquently. Aside from pointing out, again, that it's perfectly ludicrous for loathsome specimens like Malkin and Donahue to be denouncing anyone, I'll leave the defending in these capable hands.
Instead let's pick up upon an aside from Scott, his reference to how Donahue plays "identity politics." I agree.
it's interesting that aside from the always reliably suckered Danny Glover, nobody paid much attention to the wingnut blatherings about Amanda until Donahue weighed in with his claims that she and Melissa are "anti-Catholic bigots."
This is identity politics: indeed, it is a claim to a specifically minority identity. It apes claims from minority groups about their misrepresentation in majority culture.
The problem with this approach is that people like Donahue also always want to claim that they are also the majority culture. The nut of the complaint is that Christians are under assault in an overwhelmingly Christian nation.
Funny how that works.
