Wow. A New York Times article about a political party in "disarray" over the war in Iraq... and it isn't the Democrats! Astounding.
The release of the report by the bipartisan Iraq Study Group this week exposed deep fissures among Republicans over how to manage a war that many fear will haunt their party — and the nation — for years to come.
No shit.
The naked reality is that Bush won't leave and the bloodbath will only get worse through 2008. A lot of people have speculated that McCain is gambling that his call for 20.000 more troops will pay off for him, since Bush won't do it and then he'll be able to say "we coulda won this if we only did what I said!" But I don't think that will work, if he is thinking this. The war is going to continue as an utter horror, so much so that nobody will be able to play any games with it in 2008.
If the US does not disengage from Iraq, things will only get worse; Bush will not disengage; by 2008 Bush Ahab will sail the GOP Pequod into the jaws of the Great White Clusterfuck.
Gonna take the country with it, too. The only question is whether or not the Democratic majorities will be able to mitigate the disaster.
