Very Competent Masterwork
I quite honestly don't care very much one way or the other about Memeorandum, the blog aggregator thingy. I check it mostly to see what Greater Wingnuttia is squeaking about, for comedy purposes. I have gotten the sense though that right blogs care about Memeorandum a whole hell of a lot, probably because, as I've observed before, by and large conservatives take this blogging crap a lot more seriously than liberals do. (I frankly think blogs are kind of stupid, this one included, but then again we live in a world where Maureen Dowd is paid lots of money to tell the public what she thinks about things: this is irksome, and hence I have decided to pester strangers with my own ridiculous opinions. I blog selflessly, out of the highest, most selfless of motives: spite. Anyone who does otherwise is a blockhead.) Why do conservatives care about Success on Blogs more than liberals? Because a turd just isn't happy unless it knows someone can smell it, that's why, and conservative bloggers are nothing if not full of shit. (This all correlates to the truism that conservative bloggers harbor fantasies of replacing the MSM, while liberal bloggers harbor the fantasy of mainstream journalists doing their jobs.)
Anyhow, I saw somewhere that somebody had written a script that color codes the ideological affiliations of blogs linked on Memeorandum. Turns out this is true. Blue for left, Red for right. It works by links:
The colors don't necessarily represent each blogger's personal views or biases. It's a reflection of their linking activity. The algorithm looks at the stories that blogger's linked to before, relative to all other bloggers, and groups them accordingly. People that link to things that only conservatives find interesting will be classified as bright red, even if they are personally moderate or liberal, and vice-versa.
Which means, though, that someone like TBogg is pretty in pink, because most of his links (like I'd think Roy's, or SN!'s, or, uh, mine) go to conservatives, because that's where the funny lives.
All of which is mere preface to the fact that I got bored, installed the script, checked Memeorandum, and thereby found this post at American Power, which is just entertaining as hell:
Memeorandum is a really cool blog aggregator, so cool, in fact, I wonder if blogging would be as fun without it.
Yet lately I've been seeing left-wing blogs getting a preponderance of attention, especially on the "featured posts" sidebar. With the exception of Hot Air, the featured links have been to pro-Obama lefties overwhelmingly - and over and over again. It's seemed so bad I was thinking folks like the nihilist Newshoggers were paying kickbacks for the traffic.
Shazam. I shall take my theses regarding conservative blogs as proved; sometimes circumstantial evidence is quite compelling, as when you find an ass in the milk.
UPDATE FUN. Missed this from the American Power site:
But my suggestion is for political bloggers to take advantage of Memeorandum itself, reading and linking to it aggressively when writing.
That's how aspiring political commentators will get their stuff noticed - you'll be a "playa"!
My advice is that if you ever find yourself writing anything even remotely like that, you keep it the fuck to yourself. Dear God.
MUCHO MASS. I am a pinko.

OK. I stand corrected. They are both monumentally stupid AND nauseatingly narcissistic. Also very easily amused and even more easily annoyed and distracted by shiny objects. That would be why Memeorandum no longer really links to them. Did I mention that they are all batshit crazy?

God, that was funny.
As a never read blogger who has done it only and always for spite, and the historical record of same, I just laughed and laughed.
Conservatives are very, very strange people. And I'm not talking about the smart ones, like Buckley, or, *gasp* even Brooks.
Caveat: Brooks is not smart. But he did get Palin right.

I don't do it for spite, I do it because I'm gonna frickin' write stuff anyway (seriously, I've had a pretty consistent megawords per day output since I was about 13), I might as well put it out in the noosphere and see what sticks. Shit, man, I was blogging before blogs existed -- no shit, I had a Geocities website back in like 1996 that I'd update with essays every once in a while, like a lo-fi blog.
I'm just a lonely narcissistic strand of spaghetti on the giant virtual fridge known as the internet.
On the other hand, I'm occasionally a know-some-of-it, so why not?

"because that's where the funny lives"
Thers, that is good. Consider it on lone, because stealing is such an ugly word.

i use memeorandum for one thing and one thing only: traffic.
i see what stories are hot, i write about and link to them, then i repeatedly click on those links on my post over and over and over again, thus fooling the memeorandom bots into thinking a whole lot of people are reading my blog.
voila! i get a free link about "discussion" on the important linked story of the day. and tons of free traffic from memeorandum.
not only am i self-serving, i'm crassly upfront about it, too, admitting in my posts i do it for the traffic.
as to the colors, i couldn't figure out how to use the code, so i don't know if i'm blue or light blue or pink or red, tho i'm guessing blue.

LOL! Thanks, Thers, for an accurate summation of the Americanneocon. They guy seriously needs therapy.
(Still, his constant link references to Newshoggers as "nihilist lefties" is very nice for our technorati ranking. He really has a fetish for us.)
skippy's right about Memeorandum - and I think Gabe at Memeorandum would heartily agree. That's it's point - traffic. You send traffic to it, it links to you and sends traffic back. It's an entirely automated aggregator, despite Americanneocons fertile conspiracy-laden mind.

Now, if Mo and Lady Winebox could only hear and heed.

As a Newshoggers contributor, I can confirm that we are indeed nihilists. And yes, as one might imagine, it is exhausting.

So now Memeorandum has a liberal agenda?
Wow. There must really have been monsters under his crib...
