Signify the Moves That I Should Make
I can think of lots of reasons why Obama should or should not pick Hillary for VP. Lots of reasons based on politics, policy, temperament, history -- serious stuff, I mean.
And all that is valid. And actually I think medium or even long term, it's probably a terrible idea.
However, if Obama did pick Hillary, there would be such a "story" there that it would drown out everything else through its sheer awesome drama, and would thus seal a Dem victory. Oy, what a story! The pitches just write themselves.
You know, a short term victory that gets you the Presidency of the US, and the first woman Vice President ever... not so bad, as far as incentives go. Oscar Wilde's observations about temptation are worth reference in this regard.
Just saying.

...and that, my dear Thers, is why you can make book that it'll be Evan Bayh. Just so we can all have the chance once again to hold our heads and moan, as seems likely to become a Democratic election year tradition.

What will be said is Obama was soooo weak that he was forced to pick Hilary and that means that he is weak and cannot stand up to Islamofacism and the new USSR and that he will also have to be constantly watching for a dagger in the back from Billary.
Check the google, the ground work was laid for the above ways back and it has already been said.
If only the Dems had the balls to stand up for their own.

I still think an Obama/Clinton ticket would steamroll everything in their path.
Posted by: Gummo | August 21, 2008 at 09:33 AM
From everything I've read, Hillary will be taken aside by a group of millions who will form their own party and return Democracy to its roots and, just in time for the election, they'll get her on the ballot and we'll all enjoy baskets of puppies and kitties and M&Ms.
You could do worse than Obama/Clinton but I don't think you could do bigger.
Posted by: Ripley | August 21, 2008 at 10:09 AM
I'd pay money to see that.
Posted by: Jemand von Niemand | August 21, 2008 at 10:09 AM
Gummo Johnson is right.
Obama/Clinton wouldn't just be unbeatable, it would be the biggest thing in modern American history.
Which is why I remain convinced it's going to happen.
Posted by: steve simels | August 21, 2008 at 10:47 AM
I would seriously like for Obama/Clinton to happen. I can see how all the pundits/ga bags and the rest of the political press will react; imagine Modos columns, Chris Matthews rountables...
I'm not saying that this shouldn't be the ticket because of the press, I'm saying don't assume that it will be lay up. There will have to be some serious push back by progressives on the media.

If you think the veep nominee will be someone for whom there is videotape from not six months ago on which they say that McCain is qualified to be President and Obama is not, we will just have to disagree.
Posted by: Warren Terra | August 21, 2008 at 12:12 PM
Warren,
The Presidential nominee admitted to a crush on Reagan, so that's a non-issue.
Thers, I can't see a stronger ticket than Obama/Clinton. Who better?
No one. She combines the experience factor, the 18 million votes (half the undecided in the Zogby poll self-identified as Clinton voters) and the Clinton mystique.
He wants to win. He'll worry about the governing later.

Frankly, the real appeal for me is to see Larry Johnson's head assplode.
Posted by: Thers | August 21, 2008 at 01:04 PM
I think the one ticket that could be bigger would be Obama/Teddy Kennedy.
It would cause the universe to implode.
And I don't think it would be that bad an idea (even if it is terribly far-fetched).
Kennedy could campaign while dying, hitting the GOP with every shitty thing they've done while talking about health care and the positive legacy of Democratic policy -- his legacy -- while Obama concentrates on winning.
The wingers would go fucking apeshit, but they'd be attacking a terminal cancer patient.
All he'd have to do is live through the election (50-50?) and in the meantime Obama could announce the back-up pick so no-one's surprised --- but not until after the convention, so it would continue to be a parlor game for the idiot press during the RNC.
The liberal wing would be placated. Kennedy could go out fighting. And it would completely energize the campaign.

If not Clinton, Gore

Couldn't agree more. He should do it.

If you want a vision of the future, imagine a pundit speaking on a Vice-Presidential race - forever.

Obama-Clinton would marginalize McCain's presence on the TV for a crucial month, and he'd be largely forgotten. I just don't know how the Republicans would go about demobbing the puma army. More antipsychotics?

Of all the negative achievements in Lieberman’s career, it’s hard to top making Cheney the most likable man in the room
Quote of the week, as far as I am concerned. From El Gato's link.
Posted by: actor212 | August 22, 2008 at 09:44 AM
There's no PUMA army. There's a couple of people who get a lot of face time on tv because they feed into a pre-existing "Demd in Disarray" narrative.
Load. Of. Crap.

Yep. After the primaries there was only a week or so lull before the Hillary supporters started showing up at the county meetings. Now they're out registering voters on Saturdays. I don't think the media is through with the disunity narrative, though.
Posted by: coozledad | August 22, 2008 at 02:19 PM
Cooz, Molly,
Nonetheless, the Zogby poll this week shows that half the undecided voters had voted for Hillary in the primaries.
Posted by: actor212 | August 22, 2008 at 04:10 PM
Hillary Primary supporters or not, John McCain is not an intelligent choice for any Democrat or Indpendent voter (PUMA be damned!), male or female. And, intelligence aside, what Dem or Indy could 'check their gut' and come up with a vote for McCain?
Obama choosing a bag of rusty nails and empty beer cans is a better choice than McCain and Ghandi, if you ask me. The Presidency stretches far beyond the oval office - the entire administration matters, and McCain will be content to let the Bush Creeps keep their jobs and dismantle the nation while he looks for an artist to add his face to Mt. Rushmore. Assuming he's not busy launching another preemptive "Operation: Just Cuz."

Shows you the depth of half of Hillary's voters. Her and Obama are, maybe, three millimeters apart on the issues.

It's funny cuz it's true! Well, and cuz it's funny.

Hillary has a massive debt and a massive husband problem. Too much drama for Mr. Obama.

Yea.
If only voters used their intellect...
