Also, the Canadians are a sack of douchebags.
UPDATE: The above may be a bit oblique. To clarify. M. Yglesisas (heh) suggested that there may be a certain "we kick ass!!!!ONE!!!!" bias inherent in American patriotism. To wit, you were born here, hence you believe this is the bestest country evar (punctuate appropriately), and thus you declare so in a less than thoughtful fashion.
"Armed Liberal" and "Uncle Jimbo" rush to offer incontrovertible truth of this thesis. That is all.
(The appended video gets the relationship between Ms. Ivors & myself correct, except I am more dulcet.)

(also, you have better teeth than Shane.)

Good Christ AL is a wank. First, he's got those roving fan boys who ape the Comstock act, sniffing their way through what they find to be "compelling" arguments, provided they are semantically correct and non-vulgar, while the host is Epic Suck in pixel form.
His arguments are incoherent and inevitably lead to him saying to those who might question them (and call them naked) that they have the problem. That he writes like a particularly pretentious grad school hack is completely par for the course with his type.
But if you want 2 million words on some utterly irrelevant distinction between nationalism and patriotism and why liberals are unserious about their critique on their government then he's your man.

Stephen Colbert nailed the spirit of 'patriotism' recently, although in the context of sports:
"GO team ... that lives near me!"
"BEAT that team ... from that nearby town!"
"You are the BEST team and always will be ... until I move."

If America hasn't trumped the British Empire or Belgian Congo in the duration of their treatment of natives and supression of Things Our Elite Don't Like, I think we've made up for it through proxies, and the sale and use of cluster munitions.
And, at home, a Pretty, Shiny Government, and A Pretty, Shiny Media whose idea of Responsibility To The Public is on the same level as fart jokes.
Europe had the Renaissance, Edith Piaf, The Enlightenment, The Holocaust, The Black Plague, Queen, and Gunther Grass, but not in that order.
America has Thomas Jefferson, speaking to Benjamin Franklin (as quoted by the Firesign Theatre): "Hey -- let's invite over a bunch of immigrants and make cars!", and Regis.
We're Teh Awesomest Evah!

I think Carl Schurz said it best a century ago:
"My country, right or wrong --
When right, to be kept right.
When wrong, to be put right."

All that stuff's in Vegas now with fountains and lasers.

The linked articles states:
>because we are not a patrimony defined by land or by blood
Y'know, I'd buy that 'cept the Bush 43 admin wouldn't exist if it weren't for his Pappy and his being "Texan".
