The Finest Joke Is upon Us
Hugh Hewitt is always a reliable source of fun, and now that he has his a new toy to play with -- his Pledge to force GOP politicians to support the Surge! or else he'll cry! -- he's just full of hilarity.
This for instance is a funny joke:
The Senate is delusional if it thinks the American people want it to run the war. John Kerry? Joe Biden? Barbara Boxer? Patrick Leahy? Robert Byrd?
Or maybe the Senate is just reading the polls:
Newsweek Poll conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International. Jan. 17-18, 2007
Who do you trust more to make decisions about U.S. policy in Iraq: President Bush or Democratic leaders in Congress:
Bush: 32%
Democratic Leaders: 55%
Both, Neither, Unsure: 13%
And the Hewitt comedy hits keep coming:
Could some Republicans possibly have talked themselves into the idea that the country has shifted towards the Democrats on the war because of the elections?
I sure hope they didn't, because if they're as deluded as Hewitt, there'll be a hell of a lot fewer of them in 2008:
CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll. Jan. 19-21, 2007.
Suppose Congress considers a resolution which would express opposition to sending more troops to Iraq but would not take specific steps to prevent that from happening. What would you want your members of Congress to do? Should they vote to express support for sending more troops to Iraq or vote to express opposition to sending more troops to Iraq?
Support: 32%
Oppose: 64%
Unsure: 4%
None of the polls are even close. Honestly, there could be nothing better for the Democratic party than loons like Hewitt pressuring GOP senators & representatives to drink of the hemlock like this. And just look at the whole Army of Serious Thinkers & Internet Geniuses Hewitt got to sign on to his Pledge:
The posts at my site, Powerline, Instapundit, CaptainsQuarters, Misha [link removed] RightWingNews, Blackfive [link removed] etc are a systematic and serious discussion of the war and the consequences that would flow from the embrace of any defeatist memorandum from the Senate, even one signed on to by the previously reliable-on-the-war John McCain.
Yes, this list of luminaries includes that Misha. You know, for balance. Or perhaps truth in advertising.
UPDATE Added a link I'd meant to insert; thanks to Bas-o-Matic in comments. I was the one who took out the direct links to Misha & Blackfive.

I can't find that last block of qouted text in any of your links.
I was curious because I wondered if Hewitt himself removed the links to the serious discussion occuring at Nicedoggie and Blackfive.

I note the presence of Hugh G Rection and Afterbirth Milkshake in the Massachusetts delegation.
I'd signed on as Felchbush Butwontfight, which, strangely, someone caught on to and removed.

Ha! I think they've now caught Afterbirth Milkshake but Mr. Rection's standing tall. So is John Amato of C&L.
I love how Hewitt thinks the left is sorely vexed by his initiative. I'm going to give his handy pledge cards to every wingnut I know. Unfortunately in some of the wingnut comment sections more pragmatic right wing heads are trying to prevail upon their more reactionary and thuggish cronies not to follow Bush off a cliff by going along with this wacky scheme. I think Hewitt has gone off the reservation here and will be smacked down in some way for shooting off even his wee popgun at the right wing fund raising apparatus.

Do you suppose I could get a restraining order against Hewitt? There are more signatures from my state than I like to see and it's kind of creeping me out.
